Sholes glacier

Sholes glacier has the honor of being the first glacier documented as disappearing in Oregon. The glacier was identified in the late 1890s on the northwest side of Mt. McLoughlin. In the late 1930s, it was gone. The glacier flowed over steep rock, which precluded deposition of an end moraine so its maximum extent in the 1800s is unknown. In the late 1890s, it may have flowed from near the summit at ~2850 m above sea level down to below ~2600 m. While not part of the census of glaciers that currently exist versus the 1950s, its information is provided here for completeness.
